You do need a local optician to keep a check on your eyes and to give you a prescription. However, that doesn't mean you have to buy your lenses in the same place - and you probably shouldn't.

Most opticians will charge you separately for your eye examination after which they give you a prescription. If all you want is a prescription (so you can shop around for the lenses), tell them you just want an eye test and prescription. Some will charge you a bit more for the exam if you do this but it's still likely to be less than you will save on a single month's lens supply!

Alternatively, if you have had a recent eye test - less than 12 months ago - just ask for a copy of your prescription because you're going on holiday.

Whatever you decide to do, don't go without your regular eye exam - it is vitally important for your health and vision.

SpecSavers

Specsavers' website is a disappointment.

Unless you're new to wearing glasses give this website a miss. It has some basic info on eyesight problems - but it is very basic and concentrates on telling you why you should buy from them, in the process, paying double what the exact same product will cost elsewhere.

For example, ContactForLenses are up to 60% cheaper!

#1 Buying online from Specsavers is better than ordering from their shops - but you can do much better.

#2 If you can't buy your brand from Specsavers online, go elsewhere. Even if they do offer your brand online, they are very far from being the best value.

#3 For much better value, try ContactForLenses
