Top Tip!
We think the best value from Dell are the mid-range systems.

This is currently the Inspiron desktops or the Inspiron notebooks. The XPS range is aimed at the power-hungry and style conscious gaming and multimedia market.

If that's you, XPS is great but for most home users, Inspiron has more than enough power to get the job done!

Usually, you'll find the best value by taking one of their preconfigured systems and tweaking it to met your exact needs.

Dell's website can be a bit confusing. It is divided into two main sections - one for home users and one for business and government. In practice, it doesn't matter which you are - you can order from either. But remember that in the Dell business section, the price you see does not include VAT.

If you know exactly what you want, Dell has one major advantage. All Dell's systems can be customised with bigger hard disks, more memory, better graphics and soundcards, bigger screens, etc. That means you are much more likely to be able to get exactly what you want from Dell than if you walk into a high-street shop to buy a computer.

The site uses a shopping cart system so you can configure your system several different ways adding each one to your basket. Then review the contents of the basket to compare the different systems and choose the one that suits you best.
Dell supply a bewildering array of notebook, desktop and handheld computers. The site is very user friendly though. All the options are well explained with links to further information if you need it.

Each section (Desktops, Notebooks, Handhelds, etc) displays a number of well thought out machines designed to cover a range from high spec to basic machines.

Your best bet is to take one of these as your starting point and customise it as you need. The price of each option is clearly displayed so you can see exactly what you're getting and the price at any time.

Remember, on the Home and Home Office part of the site, prices include VAT but they exclude VAT on the Business section. Don't let that put you off if the business section has what you need though. Dell will be happy to supply from either section.
#1 Watch out for Dell's special offers.

They change every week and include things like a memory upgrade, a bigger screen, free delivery or a money off discount.

#2 Occasionally, Dell offers two promotions at once - say, a screen upgrade and free delivery. These offers are particularly good value.

#3 We don't think much of the "Free printer" offers. Ink cartridges for these printers cost an arm and a leg - often as much as the printer itself!

#4 If you plan to do much printing, you would be much better off buying a laser printer. Print quality is better and the cost per page printed is a fraction of that with an inkjet printer.

#5 Watch out for the cost of the extended support package which Dell includes by default when you come to buy. You can select the basic one year warranty and save 10 or 15% of the cost of your computer.
