Hyundai launches its first car with sunroof charging system

The tram market is strong, although there is still little supply. Moreover, thermal motors are not exactly out of date, given the innovative technologies that have sustained them with evolution and modernization. In this sense, Hyundai is betting on a well-known but not widely used concept. Probably soon we'll see a car with a sunroof charging system.

This eco-friendly technology will provide additional electric power to vehicles, as well as increase fuel efficiency and range.

Electric vs. Hybrid with “extra” electric… to lower CO₂ emissions

Hyundai's solar roof charging system makes its debut in the new Sonata Hybrid. The system supports the vehicle's power source, improving fuel efficiency and reducing CO emissões emissions.

In the coming years, Hyundai will implement the technology on other vehicles in its range. This is the latest application of a smart branded solution that advances the mobility industry towards a more sustainable future.
Solar roof technology is a good example of how Hyundai Motor is becoming a clean mobility provider. Technology enables our customers to actively address emissions. We are striving to further expand the application of technology beyond the range of environmentally friendly vehicles to internal combustion engine vehicles.
Heui Won Yang, vice president and head of the Body Technology Unit of Hyundai Motor Group, said.

Solar panels guarantee car battery charging between 30 to 60%

The sunroof system includes a structure of silicon solar panels that are mounted on the car roof. It will be able to charge even while driving and can charge 30 to 60% of the battery per day with 6 hours of daily charging. Thus, this new option is expected to increase drivers' travel distance by over 1300 km annually.

The system consists of a solar panel and a controller. Electricity is produced when solar energy activates the surface of the solar panel, which converts this energy using photons of sunlight. This creates pairs hole electron in silicon cells, which generate electricity from solar energy.

The electricity from this process is converted by the controller to the standard voltage then stored in the battery. Hyundai Motor considered not only efficiency but also design when developing the solar charging system.

While the solar roof system currently plays a supportive role, it also opens perspectives for vehicles that no longer need fossil fuel to operate.

Available now in the Korean market and not yet coming to Europe

Finally, it should be noted that the new Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, which then incorporates the sunroof, comes equipped with a Smartstream G2.0 GDi HEV engine. In addition, it features a six-speed transmission and is already being sold in South Korea. According to the manufacturer, it is currently planned to be marketed in North America, but not in Europe.

The future may come when electric cars come equipped with these solar panels. However, as the market is currently undecided, the question is whether solar technology is advantageous in thermal motors.
